Willow Brook Clinic opened in November 2009 and we have been happily looking after our community since then. We thought we would celebrate by sharing 15 healthcare fun facts with you about the disciplines that we offer at the clinic.
1. Chiropractic loosely means ‘done by hand’. The term “chiropractic” comes from combining the Greek words “cheir,” meaning hand, and “praktos,” meaning done.
2. Lower back pain is the No. 1 reason people seek chiropractic care. This is closely followed by neck pain, headaches, and pain in the extremities like arms and legs.
3. After the common cold, back injuries are the biggest reason for absenteeism from work.
4. Physicians, like Hippocrates and later Galen, are believed to have been the first practitioners of physical therapy, advocating massage, manual therapy techniques and hydrotherapy to treat people in 460 BC.
5. After WW1 Canadian physicians developed a therapeutic modality to help patients restore their previous physical condition and so Physiotherapy was born.
6. Physiotherapy helps prepare the body for surgery and helps the body to recover from surgery.
7. Chiropractic and Physiotherapy are drug-free treatment options. They use hand-on, exercise-based modalities to treat patients.
8. Chiropractors and Physiotherapists need to have an in-depth knowledge of the entire musculoskeletal system. There are over 600 skeletal muscles, 206 (or 210!) bones, trillions of nerves, ligaments and tendons, and much, much more.
9. Feet are truly remarkable. They are essential for our independence, mobility, balance and overall well-being.
10. The unit of shoe measurement originated in the United Kingdom during the 14th century and is still being used around the world today. Based on the length of a grain of barley, each shoe size adds a third of an inch, corresponding to the fact that there are three barleycorns in an inch.
11. The soles of your feet contain more sweat glands and nerve endings than anywhere else on your body.
12. Around 30% of people have a longer second toe than their big toe.
13. Massage is known to improve mood and sleep.
14. Touch is a crucial part of our lives. The right kind of touch can reduce pain, soothe our stress and convey emotion faster than words. It’s a sense that you can’t turn off and we should not underestimate its power.
15. Your sense of touch is the first sense you develop as a baby and it is also the last sense to fade as we age.
We hope that you have enjoyed these fun facts.
